PITTSBURGH - Community champion Dollar Bank has extended its long-standing support of Three Rivers Arts Festival, a division of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, by becoming the Festival's first-ever presenting sponsor. Dollar Bank's generous Festival sponsorship exemplifies the bank's commitment to Pittsburgh's rich cultural heritage and its visionary community partners.

"Dollar Bank is proud to support outstanding community partners," said Robert P. Oeler, President and CEO of Dollar Bank. "Like Dollar Bank, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has an exceptional track record with community events such as the Trust's First Night Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh International Children's Festival and now Three Rivers Arts Festival. Three Rivers Arts Festival is a time-honored tradition that provides Pittsburghers with a free summer destination and breaks down traditional barriers to experiencing art."

Key to Three Rivers Arts Festival's ongoing success is the strategic collaboration among the many community partners who work closely with the Festival on performing arts, producing exhibitions and curating Festival experiences, among other initiatives. According to Pittsburgh Cultural Trust President and CEO J. Kevin McMahon, Dollar Bank's substantive stake in the Festival will greatly contribute to collaborative efforts.

"Three Rivers Arts Festival is our city's largest public stage. Community collaboration is increasingly vital to the long-term survival of the Festival, which is the largest free festival of its kind in country." said McMahon. "We are grateful to Dollar Bank for its generous support, which will help us to build upon strategic community alliances for the ultimate benefit of Festival patrons for years to come."

The Festival's creativity is fueled by a growing consortium of more than 40 community partners including Sustainable Pittsburgh, Silver Eye Center for Photography, Carnegie Mellon University, Gateway to the Arts, Pennsylvania Resources Council, and Pittsburgh Filmmakers.

Among the more than 100 individual events and performances featuring more than 500 visual artists and musicians, highlights of the 2010 Festival include:

10 days and nights of live music featuring more than 50 individual acts and nightly headliners on the Dollar Bank Stage at Point State Park.

The traditional Artists Market, featuring 300 artists selling original artworks and handmade fine crafts. The 2010 Artists Market features 150 different artists each weekend, two-thirds of whom are new to the Festival this year.

The return of juried visual art and temporary public art.

Visual arts exhibitions in galleries throughout the Cultural District, including the New Juried Visual Art Exhibition, the Art of Technology, and many more.

The Creativity Zone at Point State Park, featuring hands-on activities for all ages and kid-friendly performances in the WQED Tent.

Demonstrating the convergence of art and sustainability, Three Rivers Arts Festival is a national leader in environmentally-conscious event production. With support from Colcom Foundation, over the past two years the Festival has diverted 83% of its garbage - more than 50 tons annually - from landfills through a comprehensive open-stream compost and recycling program. In 2010, as Pittsburgh has been selected as the North American Host City for the annual United Nations World Environment Day, Three Rivers Arts Festival will be the cornerstone of related activity including interactive and educational programming that complements the celebration's theme of "Water Matters" and related biodiversity issues.

In addition to Dollar Bank, Three Rivers Arts Festival is generously supported by the Pittsburgh community. The Trust is thankful for the generous contributions of Colcom Foundation; the Bessie F. Anathan Charitable Trust of The Pittsburgh Foundation; The Buhl Foundation; The Grable Foundation; Henry L. Hillman Foundation; Mary Hillman Jennings Foundation; and Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, in addition to corporate support from Giant Eagle and the Port Authority of Allegheny County. Media partners include City Paper, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, WQED Multimedia, and 91.3 WYEP-FM.

Pittsburgh, PA - Pittsburgh International Children's Theater, a division of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents the 24th annual Pittsburgh International Children's Festival from May 12-16, 2010, in the green spaces surrounding Schenley Plaza and the University of Pittsburgh, and at various indoor theaters in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh. Giant Eagle is the lead sponsor of the 2010 Pittsburgh International Children's Festival.

The Festival will feature U.S. and world premieres by performers from Scotland, Kenya, Russia, Italy, Canada, and the USA. "The 24th International Children's Festival is full of great opportunities for children and adults to see. This year's featured performances touch on themes like conservation, imagination, family, friendship, love, and so much more," comments Pamela K. Lieberman, Executive Director - Pittsburgh International Children's Theater and Manager and Children's Theater Programming - The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

The experience of live theater for a child is as extraordinary as it is unforgettable. Theater, puppetry, storytelling, sound-scapes, music, movement, and dance will open children's eyes to a world of new cultures and ideas. Each performance will be as educational as it is fun, and throughout the Festival children are encouraged to participate in the process.

In addition to the featured ticketed performances, the Festival will provide over 30 plus free hands-on academic, cultural, and international activities, as well as performances at the free outdoor Target Community Stage located in Schenley Plaza. New to the festival this year is a one-of-a-kind Interactive Technology Installation created by three local artists from Pittsburgh's East End: Fouad Bou-Joude, Amer Obeidah, and Jason Smith. The installation will consist of two Digital Harps that will allow children and adults to play sounds on laser light strings. The second installation is a Sound Pad that will create music from the nations featured in this year's Children's Festival when children and adults stand or move on top of the piece. The installation is free and will be located on the outdoor Festival grounds

During the Festival, free outdoor activities and performances will take place weekdays from 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and weekend 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

All headline concerts are presented on the Dollar Bank Stage at Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh. The free live music series, a Pittsburgh tradition, is sponsored by Dollar Bank.

J. Kevin McMahon, president and CEO of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust notes, "Three Rivers Arts Festival is one of the largest, green events of its kind that remains free to the public. The Arts Festival is a true convergence of art and the environment and so this year as Pittsburgh serves as the North America host city for the United Nations World Environment Day celebration, we are honored to present Guster, one of the most environmentally engaged music groups in the country, on the Dollar Bank Stage in Point State Park. We're proud to show the world how Pittsburgh has successfully united arts and environmental sustainability, in addition to transforming its Cultural District through robust programming and bold vision."

"Guster is honored and excited to play Three Rivers Art Festival for World Environment Day," said Adam Gardner, guitar/vocals for Guster and co-director of Reverb. "We've been doing all we can to lessen our environmental impact on the road from fueling our bus with biodiesel to powering our shows with wind power. When we heard about the zero waste efforts of Three Rivers Art Festival, it made us all the more pleased to be playing this fun event!"

"Dollar Bank has a long history with quality concerts in Point State Park, so we are very pleased to again underwrite the main music stage at the Festival," said Joseph B. Smith, Senior Vice President Marketing, Dollar Bank.
Friday, June 4: Alejandro Escovedo (7:30 pm)
After starting his solo career in the early 90s, critically acclaimed Alejandro Escovedo has gone on to release nine albums including his most recent Real Animal (2008). Since dabbling in rock and cowboy punk in the 70s and 80s, opening for bands ranging from The Sex Pistols to Los Lobos, and relocating to Austin, Texas, Escovedo has become a pioneer in Americana and alternative country.

Saturday, June 5: Guster (7:30 pm)
From humble beginnings at Tufts University, Guster has grown a massive fan base across the United States. In 1999, the band released their breakout album Lost and Gone Forever, produced by Steve Lillywhite, and has since had multiple songs hit the Adult Top 40 and the Billboard 200. Following their 2006 album Ganging Up on the Sun, Guster's sold-out eco-friendly Campus Consciousness tour featured busses fueled with biodiesel and performances powered by the wind. Guster has become a powerful advocate for environmental responsibility in the music industry, founding first the non-profit Reverb and then, this spring, the Green Music Group. This commitment to the environment, plus their poetic songwriting, unique instrumentation and fantastic vocal harmonies, make Guster the perfect World Environment Day concert.

Hailing from New Orleans, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has been mesmerizing audiences since 1977 with their raging horns and high-energy performances.
Tuesday, June 8: Jason Isbell (7:30 pm)
Jason Isbell's career took off after teaming up with fellow Alabama natives The Drive-By Truckers in 2001. After numerous songwriting credits for the band, Isbell left the Truckers in 2007 to pursue his solo career. Shortly following his departure, Isbell released his debut album, Sirens of the Ditch. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit is the follow-up effort, Isbell's first album with his backing band and even more of that classic Alabama sound.

With special guest Tift Merritt (6:30 pm)

Wednesday, June 9: Los Amigos Invisibles (7:30 pm)
This Venezuelan band has created a wholly individual sound by wrapping funk, disco and jazz in Latin rhythms. After releasing their debut album The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera in 1995, it didn't take long for the band to gain international attention. In 2001, the group moved from Venezuela to New York, and since then has earned one Latin Grammy and two more nominations, including a nod for their most recent album, Commercial. Described as "Jamiroquai meets Santana," Los Amigos Invisibles' disco-funk will have everyone dancing.

Thursday, June 10: Ingrid Michaelson
You might not know Ingrid Michaelson's name, but you've probably heard her music. Since releasing her 2005 debut album, Michaelson's songs have appeared in numerous network television shows including Scrubs, One Tree Hill and Grey's Anatomy. This Staten Island native started playing piano at age four, and has since developed into a passionate artist and skillful songwriter. She will perform at the Festival just after touring with The Barenaked Ladies and a brief UK tour.
Friday, June 11: Kris Kristofferson (7:30 pm)

The multi-talented Kris Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar and an Army Ranger before he embarked on a prodigious musical and film career, producing a catalog of more than twenty albums and acting in dozens of films. Kristofferson started as a songwriter in the 1960s, writing hit songs for Ray Stevens, Roger Miller, Jerry Lee Lewis and Janis Joplin. He landed a gig at the Newport Folk Fest with an introduction from Johnny Cash, and despite limited initial sales went on to have enormous success as both a solo artist and a songwriter. Kristofferson swept the 1971 Grammys and has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Songwriters hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame, and in 2007 received CMT's Johnny Cash Visionary Award. Still touring at 73 years old, his most recent album is Closer to the Bone, released in September 2009.

With special guest Justin Townes Earl (6:30 pm)

Sunday, June 13: Patty Griffin (6 pm)
In 1996, Griffin released her major label debut, Living with Ghosts, which showcased her raw talent, unique voice and skillful songwriting. After her third album, Griffin moved to Dave Matthew's ATO records where she has recorded four albums. This year, Griffin released the critically-acclaimed Downtown Church, a collection of mostly traditional gospel songs with a few originals. She has toured with Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch and her songs have been covered by acts including Martina McBride, Bette Midler, Kelly Clarkson, Solomon Burke and The Dixie Chicks.

The play stars Academy Award-winner Estelle Parsons in the role of the family matriarch, Violet. Ms. Parsons played Violet in the Broadway production of August: Osage County from June 2008-May 2009, where The New York Times raved, "Estelle Parsons gives a superb performance...sends chills down your spine. It may prove to be a crowning moment in an illustrious career."

Tickets ($21-$55) are available at the Box Office at Theater Square, by calling 412-456-6666 and online at pgharts.org.
Joining Ms. Parsons are Shannon Cochran as Barbara Fordham, Jon DeVries as Beverly Weston, Libby George as Mattie Fae Aiken, Steve Key as Little Charles, Emily Kinney as Jean Fordham, Laurence Lau as Steve Heidebrecht, Marcus Nelson as Sheriff Deon Gilbeau and understudying Bill and Steve, Paul Vincent O'Connor as Charlie Aiken, Jeff Still as Bill Fordham, DeLanna Studi as Johnna Monevata, Angelica Torn as Ivy Weston, Amy Warren as Karen Weston, Avia Bushyhead, understudying Johnna, Jean, Ivy and Karen, Stephen D'Ambrose, understudying Beverly and Charlie, Barbara Kingsley, understudying Violet and Mattie Fae, Bryn Magnus, understudying Little Charles and the Sherriff and Kim Martin-Cotten, understudying Barbara, Karen and Ivy.

Written by 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts (Superior Donuts, Man From Nebraska, Killer Joe, Bug), this grand and gripping new play tells the story of the Westons, a large extended clan that comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead after the alcoholic patriarch disappears. Forced to confront unspoken truths and astonishing secrets, the family must also contend with Violet, a pill-popping, deeply unsettled woman at the center of the storm.

Directed by 2008 Tony Award-winner Anna D. Shapiro, August: Osage County is a rare theatrical event: a large-scale work filled with 13 unforgettable characters, a powerful tragicomedy told with unflinching honesty and the unforgettable breakthrough of a major American playwright. August: Osage County premiered and was produced at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago in 2007.

Nominated for seven Tony Awards and winning five, including Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Director, along with Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards, including Best Play, Best Director and Best Scenic Design, August: Osage County opened at the Imperial Theatre Broadway on December 4, 2007, to wide critical acclaim. The New York Times called August: Osage County "The most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years," and it was voted The #1 Play of the Year by Time, The Associated Press, Entertainment Weekly, and TimeOut New York. After a sold-out engagement at the Imperial Theatre, the show re-opened at the Music Box Theatre on April 29th, 2008. August: Osage County closed on Broadway on June 28, 2009 after 648 performances and 18 previews, surpassing The Heidi Chronicles, Master Class, The Real Thing, and Doubt, among many others, to become one of the longest running plays in Broadway history.

The show, which the London critics hailed as "the must-see play of the year - possibly a lifetime," opened to rave reviews at The National Theatre on November 26, 2008, where it played a limited eight-week engagement featuring members of the original Broadway company. The London production was nominated for four Olivier Awards, winning one (Best Scenic Design).

The show's creative team includes Tony Award winner Todd Rosenthal (sets), Ana Kuzmanic (costumes), Ann G. Wrightson (lights), Richard Woodbury (sound) and David Singer (original music).

August: Osage County is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jean Doumanian, Steve Traxler and Jerry Frankel.

Media Contact
Jamie Cuba: 412-325-1201, cuba@pgharts.org

Press Photos
Click the images below to download print-quality files.

Estelle Parsons as Violet

Clockwise from left: Angelica Torn, Libby George & Paul Vincent O'Connor.
SHREK THE MUSICAL, based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre to life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre--not a handsome price--shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek. Featuring a terrific score of 19 all-new songs, big laughs, great dancing and breathtaking scenery, USA Today proclaims SHREK THE MUSICAL, "A big fat hit!"

About Aspen Santa Fe Ballet
In 1990, accomplished dancer Bebe Schweppe founded the Aspen Ballet Company with hopes of infusing dance education into Colorado culture. Within the next 10 years, she had created professional companies in both Aspen and Santa Fe with the help of Jean-Philippe Malaty and Tom Mossbrucker. Fusing the two company names together, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet was born.

The small ensemble has performed to critical acclaim both nationally and internationally at The Joyce Theatre, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, The Kennedy Center as well as at venues in Canada, France and Italy. The diversity of the group is magnified by the companies it has supported through Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Presents: The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Pilobolus, Hubbard Street Dance, Twyla Tharp, Mark Morris Dance Group, Sydney Dance Company, Ballet "Quetzalli" de Veracruz, Tango Danza, Peking Acrobats, Les Ballets Africains and India's Nrityagram Dance Ensemble to name a few.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has grown to become one of the largest dance presenters in the country, but has nonetheless maintained its fresh and unique signature style. Currently, Tom Mossbrucker serves as Artistic Director for the company with Jean-Philippe Malaty serving as Executive Director.

About Sue's Leg
A tribute to the world of 1930s dance and the music of Fats Waller, the nine-part suite titled Sue's Leg is one of Twyla Tharp's earliest commissioned pieces. Originally performed in 1990 by Chicago's Hubbard Street Dance, Sue's Leg was pulled from Tharp's repertoire until February 2009 when she began to collaborate with the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The piece was created for a dancing quartet with soloists featured throughout - with the accompanying Oldies/jazz musical track perfectly complemented by the sounds of the dancers' tap shoes as though a natural element of the music.

ABOUT LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO
"It isn't merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being," raves composer, musician, singer and producer Paul Simon.

For more than forty years, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has married the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions to the sounds and sentiments of Christian gospel music. The result is a musical and spiritual alchemy that has touched a worldwide audience representing every corner of the religious, cultural and ethnic landscape. Their musical efforts over the past four decades have garnered praise and accolades within the recording industry and have solidified their identity as a cultural force to be reckoned with. The group borrows heavily from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya). Isicathamiya singing style originated from the South African Zulus. In Europe this singing style is known as a capella. The word itself does not have a literal translation; it is derived from the Zulu verb -cathama, which means walking softly, or tread carefully.

Assembled in the early 1960s, in South Africa, by Joseph Shabalala - then a young farmboy turned factory worker - the group took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Ladysmith being the name of Shabalala's rural hometown; Black being a reference to oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo being the Zulu word for axe, a symbol of the group's vocal ability to "chop down" all things in their path. Their collective voices were so tight and their harmonies so polished that they were eventually banned from competitions - although they were welcome to participate strictly as entertainers.

A radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract - the beginning of an ambitious discography that currently includes more than forty recordings that have garnered three Grammy Awards and fifteen nominations, including one for their most recent recording "Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu". Their philosophy in the studio was - and continues to be - just as much about preservation of musical heritage as it is about entertainment.

In the mid-1980s, Paul Simon visited South Africa and incorporated Ladysmith Black Mambazo's rich tenor/alto/bass harmonies into his Graceland album - a landmark 1986 recording that won the Grammy Award for Best Album and is considered seminal in introducing world music to mainstream audiences. In addition to their work with Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have recorded with numerous artists from around the world, including Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, Dolly Parton, Sarah McLaughlin, Emmylou Harris, Natalie Merchant, Mavis Staples, Ry Cooder and Ben Harper.

The ensemble is regarded as South Africa's cultural emissaries at home and around the world. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been invited to perform at many special events including events for the Queen of England and the Royal Family, two Nobel Peace Prize Ceremonies, a concert for Pope John Paul II in Rome, and the South African Presidential inaugurations.

Click the images below to download print-quality photos.
